Why do I have to take my DBS to school?

Schools require you to take your DBS to each booking to ensure this matches the Assignment Confirmation sent by Step Teachers.

You MUST take your original enhanced Child Workforce DBS with you to each school when working for Step Teachers.  This requirement is to allow the school to meet the safeguarding requirements placed upon them when letting adults onto the premises.

By failing to take your DBS to a school, you may be refused entry, therefore unable to work or be paid. Photocopies or pictures of your DBS on your phone are not acceptable. The physical document must be presented.

As part of a school's internal safeguarding processes, when you arrive at the school, you are required to ‘check in’ for the day.  The school will then want to confirm the DBS certificate number matches the information provided by Step Teachers on the vetting checklist that has been sent in advance-in accordance with Regulation 21 of the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003.

A printout or logging into the Update Service will not be sufficient.

Any disclosures on a DBS can also be verified. This will have been discussed in advance, so the school is fully aware before your arrival.

Storing your DBS is crucial, even if your DBS is on the update service. To prevent damage to your DBS, Step Teachers recommend placing your DBS in a punched pocket or wallet for longevity.

If you have lost or misplaced your DBS, you will be required to obtain a new one. You can contact a member of the Step Teachers Compliance Team for help.
