Why do I have BR as my tax code?

If you see BR (Basic Rate) on your payslip, it means you’re being taxed at 20% on all your income from this job, and your personal allowance isn’t being used for it. This code is common and often only temporary.

This usually happens when:

  • You’ve started working with Step Teachers and we don’t have your tax details yet.
  • You have more than one job or pension, so your personal allowance is used elsewhere.

Once HMRC has the correct information, they’ll update your tax code. If you’ve overpaid, HMRC will refund you automatically, either directly or through a future payslip where less tax is deducted.

You can check your tax code in your HMRC Tax Service account, especially if you have more than one job.

If you haven’t received your first pay from Step Teachers yet, you can complete the New Starter Checklist.
