What steps are involved in registering for work with Step Teachers?
When you register for work with Step Teachers, we hope to make it as smooth and easy as possible to enable you to secure work.
You can see in more detail below what is involved with your registration with Step Teachers.
Initial Call
- Introduction to Step Teachers and discussion of your goals.
- Qualifying Call: Speak with your Local Resource Consultant to assess eligibility.
- Next Steps:
- If qualified, the Application form and document checklist will be sent.
- If not qualified, guidance on potential next steps is needed.
Before your Video Call
- Complete and return your Application Form, ensuring all details are accurate. You must also provide:
- Required Documents:
- CV: 10-year work history (explain gaps over 3+ months).
- Identification: 3 ID documents (Right to Work & Proof of Address).

- Right to Work Check:
- Yoti Check (for British/irish Passport holders) OR
- Share code (if applicable).
- Photo: Selfie for identification.
- Enhanced DBS Check:
- Provide an existing DBS certificate (must be on the Update Service) OR
- Complete a Step Teachers DBS application.
- Name Change Proof: If supplied documents show different names (e.g., Marriage Certificate, Deed Poll).
- Qualifications: Proof of relevant qualifications (e.g., PGCE, Degree).
- References: Full details covering the last 2 years.
- Professional referees must be senior to you and contactable through a professional email address
- For any gaps in your employment of more than 3 months we will require the details of someone that you have known for a minimum of two years, who can provide you with a character reference.
- Overseas Police Check: Required if you lived abroad for 6+ months in the last 5 years.
- Letter of Professional Standing: For Qualified Overseas Trained Teachers.
- Fit to Teach letter: If required.
- Right to Work Check:
Video Call with your Resource Consultant
- Identity Verification: Screenshot with your consultant.
- Interview: 20-minute discussion on experience & suitability.
- DBS Payment (if applicable).
- Next Steps: Compliance overview & vetting process explained.
- Recommend a Friend: Learn how to refer others.
- Feedback Opportunity: Option to leave a Google review.
Compliance
- Call from a Compliance Consultant to confirm outstanding details.
- Vetting Process:

- Address any discrepancies.
- Complete required compliance checks.
- Obtain references.
- Process your DBS application.
- Ensure Child Protection and Prevent Training is completed.
- Assign TA Training or Cover Supervisor Training (if relevant).
Cleared for Work
- Final Compliance Confirmation: You are now cleared for work.
- Assigned Recruitment Consultant: Your main contact for job opportunities.
- Welcome Call: Discuss available roles and answer any questions.
Ongoing Compliance Checks
To maintain safeguarding standards (in line with DfE Keeping Children Safe in Education), Step Teachers will conduct periodic compliance reviews:
- Annually → If no break in service.
- Every 3 months → If there has been a break in service of 3+ months.
During these checks, you may be asked for:
- An updated CV.
- References for any external work.
- Updates to your original application details.
- A new Health Declaration (every 2 years).
- Recent Training Completion.
- Confirmation of reading the DfE Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance whenever updated.
