I've been recommended to gain some school-based experience by volunteering in a school.

Gaining experience working in a school is a valuable step to help you secure a paid role in the future.

If you're exploring a career in education but aren't sure where to start—and don't yet have relevant experience—volunteering at a local school can be a great first step. It offers hands-on insight to help you decide if this is the right path for you.

This kind of placement is often built into a Level 2 or Level 3 Childcare course when studied through a college, with placements typically arranged for you. However, if you're taking an online course, you'll usually need to organise your own volunteering opportunity.

Your contribution will also be genuinely valued by schools, many of which are under increasing financial pressure and welcome the extra support.

When you register to work with Step Teachers, we'll request a reference from the Headteacher at the school where you completed your placement. Please be sure to ask them in advance if they're willing to provide this.
