I work with multiple agencies, how does this affect the tax I pay?

It is possible to inform HMRC of your employment and what allocation of your tax free allowance is allocated to each employer.

Everyone has an individual tax code which can vary depending on your circumstances. The numbers in the code tell an employer or pension provider how much tax-free income you get in that tax year. With a tax code of 1257L, you are entitled to a tax free allowance of £12,570.

1257L is the tax code currently used for most people who have one job or pension as of the date of this article in September 2024.

When you start with Step Teachers, you should provide us with a copy of your P45. If you don't have a P45 from your previous job, you will be requested to complete the HMRC Starter Checklist

If this is received after your first pay from Step Teachers, we won't have received the correct Tax Code from HMRC, and you are likely to be emergency taxed.

Working with multiple employers

When you work with various employers, each employer could have a different tax code, meaning you are taxed differently.

It is possible to "split" your tax allowance across multiple employers using the HMRC online personal tax account - https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account. You will need a Government Gateway user ID to access the account online.

Any adjustments to your tax code or if your circumstances change will be notified to Step Teachers and be reflected with an updated tax code on your payslip.
