How to place your DBS on the update service

You can place your DBS on the update service service through the DBS website.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) offer a facility to place your physical certificate on a live system, allowing current and future employers to check the status of your DBS.

To work with Step Teachers, you will require a paid for Enhanced Child Workforce DBS.

To utilise this service, you will need to subscribe to the Disclosure and Barring Service website: https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/crsc/apply

You only have 30 days from the original certificate print date to subscribe. After this time, you will need to apply for a new DBS if you wish to subscribe to the update service.

  1. Click on Subscribe to the update service
  2. Fill in your personal details. You can use the application number Step Teachers have sent you by email to subscribe before receiving your certificate. If you have received your certificate, select Use my certificate number instead.
  3. Next you will be asked for your payment details if you are subscribing to the update service with a paid for DBS.
  4. Once you successfully subscribed to the update service, you will be provided with a Update Service ID. This is personal to you and should not be shared.

The update service is available to both volunteers and people in paid for work. You can add multiple certificates to an existing account based on the following conditions.

  • If you have a volunteer DBS, you can subscribe at no charge.
  • If you have a paid-for DBS, there is a £13 annual subscription to use the service (the DBS is changing this annual charge to £16 from 2nd December 2024).
  • If you have a volunteer account, you cannot add a paid-for DBS to the account. To add a paid-for DBS you will need to create a new subscription and new Update Service ID
  • If you have a paid-for account, you can add a volunteer DBS to the account.
