How do I check the progress of my DBS?

You can check the progress of your DBS using the Disclosure & Barring Service Tracking Service.

To check the progress of your DBS, you will need to have been provided with a DBS Applicant Form reference. This will start with either an "F" or "E" followed by 10 digits.

You can log in using this reference number and your date of birth here: https://secure.crbonline.gov.uk/enquiry/enquirySearch.do

If you are processing a DBS through Step Teachers, you will be notified of your application reference number by email once the DBS has been submitted by our Compliance Team.

Once you have logged into the tracking service, you will see the different stages your DBS has to go through before it is printed and sent to you in the post.

If you have not received your DBS in the post within 14 days of the notified completion date on the tracking service, it is recommended to call the DBS to issue a re-print on 0300 020 0190. A DBS can only be requested within 93 days of the issue date, and can only be sent to the address on the original application.

While most DBS applications process within 21 days, on occasion this can take longer.

If your DBS has been at a stage for more than 6 weeks, this can be escalated. The escalation is only applicable to the stage it is currently at.

The stage your DBS is at can also move backwards, before moving forward again. If this does happen, any escalation of the stage needs to happen after 6 weeks.

It can be frustrating when your DBS takes a significant period to process, however, Step Teachers will not be able to offer you work until you have received your certificate.

We do always encourage you during these lengthy processing times to complete the rest of your vetting with Step Teachers so you are in the best position to start work once your DBS has been received.
