Do I need to declare my conviction when registering with Step Teachers?

Yes. You must declare any convictions or cautions, both spent and unspent, that are not classed as “protected” under the Ministry of Justice filtering guidance.

Step Teachers works with schools and educational settings involving children under the age of 18, including children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and occasionally vulnerable adults.  Because of this, registration with Step Teachers is exempt from the usual provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 relating to the disclosure of criminal records.

As part of your registration:

  • You will be asked to declare any convictions or cautions on the application form

  • If you declare a conviction or caution, you will be required to complete a Declaration of Convictions form, which can be accessed online

You are not required to disclose convictions or cautions that are “protected” under the Ministry of Justice filtering rules.  Youth cautions, warnings and reprimands that are protected from disclosure do not need to be declared.

All declarations are reviewed confidentially by the Compliance Team.  Having a conviction or caution does not automatically prevent registration. 

Failure to declare convictions or cautions that are required to be disclosed may result in your registration not being progressed.
